Do I need a foundation?
Naturepedic mattress foundations are made with the same excellent quality materials and craftsmanship that go into the mattresses.  Naturepedic foundations are made with certified organic cotton and FSC certified wood, ensuring that the wood is non-GMO and grown & harvested from well-managed, renewable forests.

Naturepedic mattresses may be used without a foundation in certain beds.  Beds with slats placed a maximum of 2" apart are generally able to provide adequate support; otherwise a waviness can develop in the mattress over time. Platform beds and Bunkie boards generally provide enough support to be used without a foundation.

Naturepedic's Non-Toxic Fire Protection
Naturepedic has a strong commitment to doing what is right, and non-toxic fire protection is one of them.  Naturepedic mattresses have the advantage of being filled with organic cotton, being much less flammable than polyurethane foam, latex or other petroleum based materials, and does not need to be subjected to harsh chemicals to meet government flammability standards.

Naturepedic mattresses are able to meet and exceed Federal and State flammability standards by using food grade, non-toxic ingredients such as baking soda, hydrated silica and cellulose.  Baking soda, most commonly recognized as a baking ingredient, is non-toxic and an excellent fire retardant.  Silica, a major component of human tissue, bones, teeth and cartilage, is a naturally occurring mineral and is sold in health food stores as a dietary supplement.  Silica exists in large quantities in clay, sand and rocks, and is a primary ingredient in many natural toothpastes.  Cellulose, to which the baking soda and hydrated silica are permanently bonded, is an organic compound with a low carbon footprint and primarily sourced from eucalyptus and poplar trees.  Baking soda, hydrated silica and cellulose fiber come together to create powerful non-toxic fire protection that does not break down.

Nearly all conventional mattresses are constructed with polyurethane or latex as the primary filler.  Being highly flammable by nature, these materials are either treated or wrapped in industrial strength fire retardant chemicals.  Fire retardant chemicals raise a great deal of concern about toxicity and health.  Most manufacturers do not disclose which chemical ingredients are used in their mattresses.
