The Original Tummy Tub Baby Bath Tub has just arrived and we have already received several inquiries about this great new baby bath tub.  To answer all your questions, we have posted the Tummy Tub FAQ.  If you still have further questions, feel free to call 305-527-8734 or email info@babyecotrends.com.

Why use the TummyTub?
During the nine months in the womb, your baby feels safe, comfortable and secure. After birth everything changes for your baby, suddenly there are bright lights, new sights, new sounds, thirst, hunger, gravity and a constantly changing world. The TummyTub was developed by physicians, midwives and nursery nurses to ease the transition from the secure environment of the womb to this strange new world. The TummyTub’s unique womb shape helps your baby relax and become calm in the familiar fetal position.

How much water should I use?
The TummyTub has a 13cm/5″ water mark and water should come up to your baby’s chest. If your baby is very young, during the first few weeks it is recommended that you increase the level of water so that your baby’s shoulders are covered. Adjust the level of water depending on the weight of your baby. If your baby is bigger, reduce the amount of water in the TummyTub.  The water level markings are intended only as a guide, as not all infants are the same size.

How do I hold my baby?
In the “sitting” position the rounded shape of the TummyTub helps to support your baby. You simply need to support baby’s head under the chin. The advantage is that you always have one free hand to wash and comfort baby. In the “floating” position you have one hand under your baby’s chin and the other at the back of the head; or you can place both your hands under baby’s armpits.

Is it safe?
Yes! The TummyTub is absolutely safe. It has safety certifications from ASTM (USA), TUV (Germany) and BSI (England) tested and approved. The TummyTub is permitted to carry the seal GS (Proven Safety). It has been designed in such a way that the water creates the stability.  Never leave baby unattended in the TummyTub.  You must always be there to give support & reassurance.

Is it bad if my baby wants to stand up in the TummyTub?
No, because as your baby grows, the buoyancy of the water will encourage your baby to learn to stand.  It is now believed that children who are bathed in the TummyTub are learning to walk sooner.  However, if after a few minutes you want your baby to sit instead of stand, take a hold of her legs, and put her bottom first in the tub.  Legs can extend upwards and many babies like this position as they grow.  Never leave your baby unattended in the TummyTub.  You must always be there to give support and reassurance.

Is the TummyTub too narrow?
No, babies enjoy the feeling of security and confinement that the TummyTub affords.

Does the TummyTub help with gas and colic?
Yes. First, massage baby’s tummy with some infant massage oil in a clockwise direction.  Then give baby a relaxing bath in the TummyTub. This will help relieve any pain.  In Germany, doctors prescribe a TummyTub specifically for gas and/or colic.

Does the TummyTub help with sleeping problems?
Yes, a warm and relaxing bath is always soothing if sufficient water at the correct temperature is used. Ensure the water covers your baby’s shoulders.

What are the most suitable surfaces for the TummyTub?
With the TummyTub, bathing is easy on most surfaces: on a table or counter top, the floor, in any room of the house, at the beach, on a boat, even when camping.  It is also perfect to take with you when traveling.  The TummyTub can also be placed on a TummyTub Two-Step Stool while you sit comfortably in a chair to bath baby. This will help to prevent shoulder & back pain.

Why can I not use a household bucket?
A regular household bucket is not suitably designed for bathing babies safely.  Normal buckets don’t have an anti-skid bottom.  The bottom is not curved and therefore does not give baby any support.  Babies discover their new world by touching with their hands and tasting with their mouths. The pigments in plastic buckets will most likely contain toxic elements, as normal buckets aren’t meant for bathing babies.

The transparent material of original TummyTub allows you to view baby from all sides.  Unlike a regular household tub, the TummyTub is just the right size & shape for safely bathing baby.  A normal bucket would never have the TUV and BSI approval for baby bathing.

How do I clean the TummyTub?
Cleaning the TummyTub is very easy.  Use a mild biodegradable detergent, as you would any baby bath or tub.  Do not use abrasive cleaners.

Is the TummyTub suitable for bathing newborn babies?
Yes, the original TummyTub is uniquely designed to make your newborn baby feel secure when bathing. Like in the womb, your baby can still move freely while feeling safe and protected.  You simply need to support baby’s head under the chin with one hand and have the advantage of washing & comforting the baby with your free hand.  In the floating position you have one hand under the baby’s chin and the other at the back of the head; or you can place both hands under your baby’s armpits. After approximately 12 to 16 weeks, your baby will have enough strength to support his own neck and you are free to use both hands.  The original TummyTub is highly recommended for premature babies.

Can I bathe my baby in the TummyTub while the umbilical cord is still attached?
Yes. Midwives across Europe and the United States use the TummyTub shortly after baby is born to gently introduce baby to the new world.  The tub is perfectly safe for new babies and premature babies.  No soap is necessary, just allow the newborn to soak and relax.  Midwives testify that no infections or problems occur due to this type of bath with the umbilical cord attached.

Til what age can the TummyTub be used?
The therapeutic benefits of the TummyTub (easing colic, gas, and giving the reassurance and confinement of the fetal position) are applicable up until about six months of age.  However, the practical aspects of the tub last well beyond this stage, and it is the only baby tub needed before transitioning to the household bath tub.  As with a conventional baby bath tub, many babies prefer using the large tub once they are up and walking. The TummyTub is safe for babies and toddlers up to age three or 35 pounds.

What can I do with it when my child grows out of it?
TummyTub can be used for storage, plants, washing the car, storing wooden blocks & toys….

How ecological is it?
The TummyTub is extremely ecological. It uses less water, saves energy (heating of water), is made out of environmentally friendly materials, and is fully recyclable.  The original TummyTub uses only 1.3 gallons of water on average, approximately 2.5 gallons less than conventional baby baths.  Therefore, the original TummyTub saves water and energy. It is easy to carry and kinder to your back (1.5 gallons weighs about 11 lbs).  The TummyTub is lightweight even when full, which is very important for new mothers, especially after a caesarean delivery.  After bath time, you can easily carry the TummyTub outside and water your garden or lawn.

How long will the water remain comfortably warm?
Due to the small water surface, water will remain at a comfortable temperature for about 20 minutes.

Where is the TummyTub used?
The TummyTub is used extensively in Holland where the idea came from, Germany where it is manufactured, the UK, France, Spain, Poland, Ireland, Canada, Mexico and many other countries around the world.  In fact, in Germany doctors prescribe the TummyTub for babies suffering from colic.   It is now being adopted in many maternity hospitals around Europe.

How long has the TummyTub been around?
The TummyTub was first introduced in 1996.

Why should I buy the optional Tummy Tub Stand?
The stand allows you sit while bathing your baby and will help in preventing shoulder & back pain.  The stand is multi purpose and can later be used as a stepping stool with two levels as your child gets older to get up to the bathroom sink and toilet.  It can also be used as a storage device for toys or little bathroom items.  Just recently, some Irish midwives have spotted another use for it – they say it is good as a foot stool for breastfeeding mothers to raise their knees while feeding their baby.

How does the TummyTub compare to similar European baby tubs?
The Original TummyTub is the first of its kind and the only patented upright baby bath tub in the United States.  There are several imitation European style baby bath tubs now available.  Some of these imitation tubs are made in China and the quality cannot come close to that of the German engineered TummyTub.  The design of the TummyTub is unique in that it closely resembles the shape and confinement of the mother’s womb, and is tall enough to keep the baby warm at all times.  No other baby bath tub comes close to the Original TummyTub!

Colic Relief

January 5, 2009

Filed under: Product Reviews — Baby Eco Trends @ 4:44 pm

What is colic and is there a colic cure?

Does your baby cry inconsolably for hours on end? She’s fed, has a clean diaper, not ill, but won’t stop crying? As many as one out of four babies suffers from colic. If you believe your baby is one of them, there are steps you can take to help save your sanity and provide comfort to your baby.

Every baby cries, as they have limited means of communicating their needs. But some babies cry for extended periods, even well fed, healthy babies. Baby colic is characterized by inconsolable crying that lasts for hours, without any obvious reason. Generally, colic begins in the first couple weeks of a baby’s life and may continue until the third or fourth month and often goes away quite abruptly. Many parents report that the crying bouts occur at about the same time of day, late afternoon to early evening. Some babies experience colic at night time and their colic is the cause of sleepless nights for baby and parents. Therefore, it is helpful to remember that colic does end and is not ever-lasting, it just feels like it is.

The first thing to do is to rule out any other possible causes. keep track of crying bouts and consult your pediatrician to help identify the cause. Gastric reflux or allergies may be the culprit in some cases, but the majority of colicky babies are perfectly healthy and thriving. If baby is well fed and otherwise healthy and cries regularly for more than three hours at a time, you may have a colicky baby. Although colic is more prevalent among bottle fed babies, breast fed babies may suffer, as well. In breast fed babies, the mother’s diet may affect symptoms and minor changes may prove effective. Breast feeding mothers of colicky babies are advised to limit or eliminate dairy from their diet to observe its effects on baby. As newborn’s digestive system is still maturing, it may not be able to process dairy process the proteins that pass through breast milk, causing abdominal gas that can be extreme painful. Some believe colic is not treatable and must simply be endured.

For anyone that has lived with a colicky baby, simply letting baby grow out of the colicky stage is not an option. Prescription drugs such as simethicone (brand names: Phazyme; Flatulex; Mylicon; Gas-X; Mylanta Gas) and dicyclomine (brand names: Bentyl, Byclomine, Dibent, Di-Spaz, Dilomine) have very limited success, if any at all. The side effects of prescription drugs on tiny bodies must be carefully considered before administering any prescription drug. Probiotics (live microorganisms containing bacteria or yeast) have yielded results for some babies. It is useful to point out that breast milk contains natural probiotics that accounts for healthy gut flora, limiting the occurrence of colic.

Some babies respond well to music or white noise. Carrying baby around in a sling or baby carrier is very comforting and a great bonding experience for baby and parent. Take baby for a walk – this will help you relieve stress, as well. If your baby’s pain is the result of abdominal gas or cramps, baby massage may be very soothing to both baby and parents; try rubbing baby’s belly with a little massage oil in a clockwise motion. Try placing baby face down across your lap and patting her back. There are many good books and DVD’s that provide great instructions on baby massage and they may prove to be lifesavers for parents of colicky babies. Many parents continue to administer baby massages long after baby grows out of the colicky stage.

Natural alternative remedies such as gripe water is a time tested remedy for colic, teething pain and abdominal gas. Its main ingredients are usually fennel, dill, anise, licorice, ginger, chamomile and other herbs that have alleviate digestive problems in babies, as well as adults. Burping baby after every meal, and even during feeding, may be helpful. Some parents find baby swaddling to be an effective solution. Some infants self soothe by sucking on baby pacifiers. Being rocked may also be comforting to a colicky baby. Parents may try placing infant on its side or holding baby upright to determine the most comfortable position for a baby in the grips of colic. Many parents find that what works for one baby may not work for another. Often times, parents find a colic cure by trying different measures and closely observing patterns.

If you are the parent of a colicky baby, you may agree that watching your precious little one wriggle and shriek is an extremely painful experience that often leaves you feeling helpless and hopeless. You may even end up blaming yourself, wandering what you could have done differently to prevent this misery. It is useful to remember that colic affects babies around the world and is not related to bad parenting. You must resist the urge to blame yourself. Recruit patient, understanding adults that can take over when you are at your wit’s end. Lots of deep breathing can be helpful during times of extreme stress.

We are so very excited to announce that we have just partnered up with a manufacturer of safe children’s furniture. Ecotots designs & manufactures a high quality, full line of environmentally friendly, real wood modern furniture & furnishings for kids which assemble quickly & easily without the use of tools or hardware. Everything is made from renewable FSC Certified Smart Wood® & is available in a variety of eco friendly UV finishes.

Please take a look at the beautiful selection of furniture that you might mistake for European imports. Ecotots is based in Indiana & all their products are made right here in the USA! We like their small, green footprint & think that you will, too.

The fact that Ecotots makes their furniture without the use of formaldehyde is especially agreeable to us, as there is good reason to believe that it is extremely dangerous to our health & the health of the planet. Formaldehyde is used in many products including cosmetics, paper, wood, furniture, cigarette smoke, industrial fertilizers, dyes, glues/adhesives, permanent press fabrics & embalming fluid.

Formaldehyde is a colorless gas compound (HCHO) recognized as a carcinogen, meaning it causes cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), when formaldehyde is present in the air at levels exceeding 0.1ppm, some individuals may experience health effects such as watery eyes, burning sensations of the eyes, nose & throat, coughing, wheezing, nausea and skin irritations. Some people are very sensitive to formaldehyde, while others have no reaction to the same level of exposure.

Several NCI studies have found that anatomists & embalmers (professionals with potential exposure to formaldehyde), are at an increased risk for leukemia & brain cancer compared with the general public.

Some studies of industrial workers have suggested that formaldehyde exposure is associated with nasal cancer, nasopharyngeal cancer and possibly with leukemia. In 1995, the International Agency for Research of Cancer (IARC) concluded that formaldehyde is a probable human carcinogen. However, in a reevaluation of existing data in June 2004, the International Agency for Research of Cancer reclassified formaldehyde as a known human carcinogen.

Now, can you see why we’re so excited about Ecotots? Read the complete NCI factsheet here: http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/risk/formaldehyde
